Gardening club hear about bees and talk about Beechgrove Garden

The Eskdale gardening club held their March meeting last Friday in the Cross Keys Hotel, Canonbie. Chairman Grace Brown welcomed a good attendance of members and introduced the speaker for the afternoon, Phil Collett an ardent beekeeper from Eastriggs who has beehive colonies over a wide area of Dumfriesshire.

Mr Collett gave a fascinating account of the life of honey bees, emphasising how hard they worked during the Summer months to produce the honey which is so beneficial to our health. He also gave an insight into the various species of bee we might find in our gardens and suggested ways we might encourage these to forage in our beds and borders to improve the natural environment.

We were however alerted to look out for the Asian hornet which had made its way over the Channel from France and had been found in several places in the south of England. These were very detrimental to bees and many other insects and were certainly not welcome in our gardens.
