Canonbie residents gather to hear the options for valuable village asset
Over fifty people met in Canonbie last Wednesday in the Cross Keys hotel to discuss the future of their shop and post office which is likely to close.
Councillor Denis Male chaired the meeting and in attendance were Mr Andrew Scott, current postmaster, Jamie Dent of Dumfriesshire East Community Benefit Group and members of Canonbie Community Council.
Mr Scott explained to everyone his reasons for retiring and explained that although he had given notice to the Post Office of this and was due to retire in February 2024, he would be willing to stay on if, and until, a community group was willing and able to take on the business. He would prefer if there was no interruption to business.
People at the meeting agreed that they were keen to protect the shop and post office and a small working group of Community Council members has already met to look at the possibility of a local trust or other such organisation taking it on. As it stands the post office premises are leased and there is two years to run on the lease.
