Margaret Pool writes;
A number of folk will recall that back in the 1990s, one of the Langholm Initiatives’ project groups, the Bonnie Langholm Committee, held an annual fund raiser towards
the provision of seasonal hanging baskets and planters for the High Street, the Town Hall and the Buccleuch Centre. Any surplus money went towards upgrading the towns’ public gardens and entrance beds. The latter projects were tackled in partnership with D&G Council Ground Maintenance Department. Sadly, the “cooncil” has, more recently, fallen on hard times. The local ground maintenance staff has been whittled down from around eight at its peak, to two full timers and a part time helper – hopefully, this gentleman will be back to full time duties shortly. A team this size has its limitations and given that their responsibilities now stretch from Langholm to Kirkpatrick Fleming, it is not surprising they have no spare capacity.
Unfortunately, Bonnie Langholm too had to be disbanded, when after 27 years service to the community, no one could be found to take on its leadership and fund raising responsibilities.
