Securing the A7 at Townfoot from flooding must be
a priority for BEAR Scotland and D&G Council
By Mark Hallam
Following serious A7 flooding during Storm Amy on 3rd October the Council Roads Department came and used new and extra heavy equipment to unblock multiple roadside drains up Hallpath. It’s unclear what if anything has been done to the big storm drain at the top which considerably magnified the problem. A concerned local resident did further work, by digging out the drain, in the days after the storm. It seems highly likely this drain needs some modifications to reduce the risk of it blocking again.
Following this event Councillor Denis Male worked hard to arrange joint working between BEAR Scotland and Council Roads Department, including walking round danger spots with a BEAR representative and also submission of a petition, co-signed by many concerned locals. With the subsequent unblocking of the Hallpath road drains it was to be hoped that important first steps had now been taken towards solving these decades long problems. It was hoped that all that remained was the matter of BEAR Scotland and the Council roads team agreeing to a process of regular maintenance of all roadside drains as well as the big storm train which blocked during Storm Amy.
