The vegetables say it all

MARGO and Gerald Smith, the owners of Netherby Hall, Longtown opened the doors of the hall for a fabulous fundraising weekend for Maggie’s Cancer Care and their wonderful restored 1.5-acre walled garden.
Emma Tennant, painter, gardener, amateur botanist and historian from Newcastleton, exhibited her botanical watercolours in the Oak Hall over the weekend, some of which she painted recently in the walled garden.
The weekend concluded with the drawing of the grand draw which had an array of garden-themed prizes, generously donated by businesses in the area.
Maggie’s spokesperson Katie Tait said “Netherby Hall was the perfect venue to combine art and gardening bringing people from Cumbria, Northumberland, Dumfriesshire and the Borders to enjoy Emma’s art and enthuse the green-fingered in the beautiful gardens and grounds.”
The weekend raised more than £5,191 to help Maggie’s Centres provide practical, emotional and social help to cancer patients and their families.
Some of the volunteers, along with Emma and Gerald, presented the funds raised to Chris Bray of Maggie’s Centre, Newcastle.
