The annual celebration of the Bard went ahead with a good attendance despite plumbing problems at the hall during the day. President Joan Cubbon opened proceedings by thanking Aileen, John, Mark and plumber David Divers for their successful efforts to restore water to the hall.
Joan said the Selkirk Grace, and this was followed by the haggis being piped into the hall by Richard Henderson and carried aloft by Ann Greybe. Next came The Address to the Haggis and a delicious meal of haggis, neeps and tatties, cottage pie and trifle was enjoyed by all.
Mairi Telford Jammeh, toasting the Immortal Memory of Robert Burns for the first time, gave an excellent speech concentrating on Burns’ egalitarianism, love of nature and poetry. She concluded her tribute with inviting everyone to join her in singing Of A’ The Airts, her father’s favourite. Niall Cubbon toasted the Lassies in song and with many humorous asides. Nancy McLure replied
with an entertaining speech on The Seven Ages of Man.
