Copshaw on the the cusp of red and amber for Éowyn

Health Centre provided a Warm Hub throughout the storm

By Gilly Fraser

Storm Eowyn started causing problems for Newcastleton even before the first ferocious blast of wind hit the village. The Holm Show Coffee Morning – always a top favourite in the village social calendar – was due to be held on Saturday January 25th, the day after Eowyn. The forecast for that day looked a lot kinder, but there was a very high likelihood of power cuts on the Friday which would put a stop to the committee members doing their usual job of baking enough scones, shortbread and traybakes to satisfy a full Village Hall. After much discussion, the decision was taken very reluctantly to postpone the coffee morning till the following weekend. Villagers who kept a close watch on the weather forecasts in the run up to Storm Eowyn say they painted a confusing picture. Much of Dumfries and Galloway and parts of the Borders were recovered by a rare and scary red alert, but Newcastleton appeared to be right on the edge of it.
