Windy and rough conditions take their toll

Hounds

WINDY weather and rough terrain took its toll on the hounds in the first trail at Newcastleton on Saturday.
Tynemouth looked like the winner down the finish only to stop in a pool of water a few metres before the line and all the others followed suit with the exception of Willie Telford’s Fire Bolt who never faltered and came on to win.
After a lot of persuasion from their handlers the others eventually came over the line in single file.
Next race was the senior maidens and luckily for them the rain came on during the trail and as they appeared over the top Castle Clansman was on his own and was over the finishing line before the others appeared. Eagle Hope was next to come for second place and Chancer was the only other finisher.
Local hound Polaris was first on to the finish and held on strongly to win the puppy trail

with the favourite Jazzle about three lengths back in second and Delta Scope running well for third. Eagle Star and Fire Belle took the other places.
Next up were the puppy maidens and catchers were getting a bit nervous as they were taking a long time to appear. When they did, Sportsman was in front and held on down the finish to win easily from Border Blossom and Fire Gem.
Veterans
Final race of the day was for the veterans and Langholm hound Castle Caledonia started favourite and did not disappoint his followers as he came down the finish with a clear lead over the rest of the field.
Congratulations go to the two maiden champions who both ended the competition with wins. Castle Clansman is the Senior Maiden Champion and Sportsman is the Puppy Maiden Champion.
