Langholm took on Dunbar in another rescheduled East League 2 match on Saturday. Back in October Dunbar inflicted a heavy defeat on the Milntown men so the home side knew it was going to be a tough match – and so it proved.
The first quarter of the match was stalemate with both sides attacking and defending well. However it was Langholm who opened the scoring with a well-worked try from Ben Jardine, converted by Smith.
Langholm now started to get more ball and made a number of good attacks on the Dunbar line. Flanker Rikki Kiore crashed over for a well-taken try which Smith converted, before Dunbar struck back with a converted try. Jardine’s second try made it 19-7 at half time.
Kiore scored again in the second half, before Dunbar stuck back again to bring the score to 24-14. Jardine’s third try extended the lead, but Dunbar came back with another converted try to reduce it to just eight points in the last quarter. A good Langholm attack saw Calum Helling score in the corner, but Dunbar were not finished and poor defence saw them run in for another converted try. Langholm hung on for the last five minutes for a dogged 34-28 win.
Langholm are now sitting in second place in the league just behind North Berwick, with a home fixture against Livingston on April 30 and visit to Leith for a crunch match on May 7. This weekend all roads lead to Milntown for the return of The Langholm Sevens a after two year gap, with the first tie kicking off at 2pm .
