Langholm internationalist Alan Friell finally honoured
Alan Friell, who grew up in Langholm, and who is the son of the late Isa and Willie Friell and visits the town regularly was formally ‘Capped’ for rugby at Murrayfield on Friday. He attended along with others who had played for Scotland but who did not receive a cap for that at the time.
Scottish Rugby announced last August that it was to honour, retrospectively, more than fifty players who represented their country in matches that, at the time didn’t carry Test cap status. They said that they wanted to be inclusive while protecting the integrity of a Scotland cap.
Alan who did play games for Langholm on occasion, played most of his rugby for London Scottish who are based in Richmond, Surrey. He played for Scotland in Glasgow against the Netherlands in 1974 and the Dutch Rugby Union awarded caps to their players whilst the Scottish Rugby Union did not. It was for this game that he was being Capped last Friday. He is Cap number 1200.
