At five o’clock in the morning, with the dull skies hiding the sunshine from the surroundings, the flute band struck up at Townfoot before leaving on their ritual parade to arouse the residents of the town and remind them just what day it was.

The time honoured ceremony took place once again onFriday under circumstances of a most favourable nature, the weather throughout the entire day being all that could be desired.

Joined in jubilation
An early awakening on Common Riding morning, the sight which met the eye was not too bright, as the dawn had indeed broken cold and grey, with mist-enshrouded hills, and dampness in the air, but nevertheless, one was inclined to be optimistic as regarded a not-too-bright beginning.

Resounding cheers after Cornet takes the standard
A rather bright aspect was taken on by the weather, the sun making a gallant attempt to shine on the rapidly gathering crowds in the High Street and Market Place. At 8.30am, punctual to the minute, Cornet Grieve and his right and left hand supporters , ex-cornets Thompson and Irving rode up to the Town Hall to receive the standard.

Record-breaker Rae
Semi-jubilee Cornet Robert Rae is something of a record-breaker – this is his 35th consecutive year of riding the common, with only one interruption caused by the foot and mouth epidemic in 2001.

It is something you will never experience again- an honour
If Bill Harkness’s year as Cornet is anything to go by, tomorrow’s weather is going to be the best of the summer. In 1962 the weather leading up to the day was ‘atrocious’ for a month but the last Friday in July was ‘clear and warm’ and ‘King Sol smiled on the town’.

Playing the flute at AGM
