Old Copshaw hostlery closes its doors

SAD DAY: ‘The Lidd’ has been part of Newcastleton social life for decades

One of Newcastleton’s longest-established businesses has closed down.

The Liddesdale Hotel in Douglas Square has been at the heart of hospitality in the village for many years, welcoming local people and visitors alike.

Back in 1970 when it was still known as The Commercial, it also became the birthplace of the hugely popular Newcastleton Traditional Music Festival which grew from the Accordion and Fiddle Club whose members met regularly there.

In 2018 and 2019 the hotel won gold awards under the Best Bar None Scotland scheme, having previously won silver twice. The scheme is supported by the Scottish government, Scottish Borders Council, Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and encourages licensed premises to improve the safety of their staff and customers and to adopt high management standards.
