David Calvert is presented with his medal by Lord Lieutenant
It was wonderful to see octogenarian David Corrie Calvert be presented with his MBE medal on Sunday in Langholm Town Hall by Fiona Armstrong the Lord Lieutenant of Dumfries. The award was originally announced in the 2024 New Years Honours list.
David was awarded the MBE for his services to the community which over the years have been tremendous. His service to Langholm Town Band have been nothing short of exemplary.
David joined Langholm Town Band when he was eleven and a half years of age and first played in it to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation in June 1953. This was quickly followed by the Common Riding that same year.
He has played in the band ever since including in many competitions and at some major events. David started teaching young people in the band many years ago and the number of folk he has enabled to play a brass instrument is impossible to quantify. He still plays with the band and acts as the band librarian. Langholm Town Band is the oldest continuous brass band in Scotland.
Some of David’s playing highlights include:
1953 Langholm’s celebration for Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation
1972 Neil Armstrong is made the Freeman of Langholm
1988 Lord Mayor of London’s Parade
2015 Commemoration of the battle of Waterloo at the Usher Hall, Edinburgh
Durham’s Miners’ Galas
