Plant expert Helen elected head of worldwide club

The E&L’s top gardening expert has been elected president of a very exclusive club.

The Meconopsis Group was set up in 1998 to study what is better known as the Himalayan Blue Poppy.

This beautiful but mysterious plant was first introduced into cultivation in the 1920s, and  caused a sensation. Its popularity has increased ever since, and many new cultivars have been raised from the original species.

Helen Knowles, who runs Tinnisburn Plants and writes a popular monthly gardening column for the E&L, was voted into the top job at the most recent meeting of the Group at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh.
