It all began some misty years ago with an advert in the E&L Advertiser for young football players, trials were to be held on the Scholars field. From there the base of the squad was formed that would carry us through from U11’s to U18’s, some left, some stayed a while, some new faces came in, and the many were together until the end, but one constant remained, the manager, Alistair Henderson.
From Carlisle to Dumfries, from Pirelli FC to Annan Athletic FC we took on them all, and we did it with some talent and skill, but a football team is a reflection of its manager, and we were all heart, spirit, and character. Alistair was a winner, intimidated by no place, no ground, no team, no person. He instilled in us the need to work hard, to always play with intensity, to never back down, he made us believe in ourselves, qualities that extended beyond the football field and served us in our home, school, and social lives.
As the years passed Alistair became more than a coach, charismatic, kind, funny, tough when he had to be, but always fair, he became like a second father to many of us. Toughest of all on his son Barry, a special boy, a special player, a quiet leader, Alistair was so proud of his son, but he let us know there would be no exceptions, we all had to give our best, we all had to work hard.
With every season we improved, we won most, lost few, and if you beat us on the road, wait until we get you back to the dump, take your best shot and well see what you’ve got!
When the chips were down the shout would often go up “let’s do it for Alistair”, he inspired us and, in the end, we inspired him in return, our crowning glory the U18 league cup.
At times we talked of Larsson and McCoist as our heroes, but they weren’t, a real hero makes sacrifices for others, dedicates time to create opportunities, goes above and beyond, ultimately, we all knew what Alistair did for us in a town where opportunities for young footballers were limited.
When it was all over, we all went our ways, travelled our new paths as adults, but a bond remains that will never be broken.
Thanks for all the memories, Alistair, gone but shining on in the hearts of your boys who became men.
Rest easy Al, but not too easy, get fired in tae them up there, give em hell!
