The Holm Showed us: Sunshine on Copshaw

FARMER Glen Wilson produced the overall champion sheep in a gripping interbreed contest at the Holm Show last Saturday.
Glen, of Bonchester Bridge, won with his Texel after judge Jim Sinclair placed him ahead of a North Country Cheviot ram, aged, shown by Bridgewater & Wood of Potholm, Langholm.
It was shown by Aaron Wood, aged nine, for his dad, Chris, who also won the reserve championship in his section with a tup lamb.
The Blackface champion was a gimmer, shown by Gordon Jackson of Blackburn, Newcastleton. She won the overall championship last year.
A two-year-old ram shown by Charlotte Goddard of Frankstown, Longtown, won the Continental championship. Charlotte works for Carrs Billington.
Langholm Academy pupil Harry Hope took home two trophies for his parents, David and Marion, of Albierigg, Canonbie, when his Bluefaced Leicester ewe and Greyface lamb took their respective championships.
Ben and Sam Mitchell of Longwood, Langholm, had to substitute their intended entry in the any other breed class but the Suffolk ewe lamb they brought took the honours.
Hindhope
Tom Elliot of Hindhope, Jedburgh was successful with his two-crop South Country Cheviot ewe which was by a home-bred ram Hindhope Thistlecrack.
After the suspense of the championships, it was the turn of the young handlers. The winner would qualify for the championship at Langholm Show on September 28.
First up were the under 10s and Will Beattie of Smithfield, who was showing a Coloured Ryeland, won his class. In the 10 to 16 class the winner was Niamh Gorton of Penton. After some careful judging Will was declared the winner.
Goats returned to the show this year courtesy of Julie Thomson of Newcastleton. She showed her Pygmy goats and the champion was a nanny goat called Gucci. She was bought as a kid and Julie intends to breed from her.
There was plenty of activity in the dog ring. Top Jack Russell was Kirsty Duncan’s eight-year-old Sprocket, while the best gun dog was the very lively Labrador Ella, aged 13 months, shown by Murray Butler of Hawick.
In the collie section Brian Mackay of Bentpath won the rough-haired collie class with Bryn, while Robert Carruthers won the smooth-haired with Sam. Brian went on to win the championship.
Nathan and Maddy Grierson of Penton won the junior poultry trophy with a Maran cross bantam.
