Letter to the Editor
I am writing again to express my deep concern regarding the unsafe, deteriorating state of Erskine Church in Langholm. Please
review the attached images, which show
debris dislodged and thrown into my Mum’s yard during high winds at the weekend. Just moments before this, three young children were playing in the same area! I don’t need to emphasize how catastrophic the consequences could have been if this object had struck a child.
I am becoming increasingly frustrated by the
apparent inaction and indifference shown by D&G Council towards this hazardous structure. I contacted D&G Out of Hours to report the issue and register a dangerous building, and I have yet to receive a response. Is this truly the level of service and care that you deem acceptable?
At this rate, something extremely serious will happen if this situation continues to be ignored. I won’t even go into the ineffectiveness of the
so-called “safety netting,” which is flapping in the wind like tissue paper and clearly not serving its intended purpose, as demonstrated by the debris that landed in the yard over the weekend.
Unless immediate and meaningful steps are taken to make this building safe, I will not hesitate to contact all local, regional, and national news outlets to bring attention to this growing threat. This is a catastrophe waiting to happen.
Regards,
Denise Irving-Lang
