Far-reaching effect on the community as Ewes Water site has to postpone opening for season
The community was shocked to learn, last week, that the bridge at Milntown, Langholm Rugby Club’s headquarters, has been restricted to cars and light vans only. This is following recommendations from a recent inspection and capacity assessment.
The implications of this is serious, not only for the club, but for the community as a whole as it renders Ewes Water Camping and Caravan Park unusable until a solution is found.
The E&L interviewed Langholm Rugby Club president, Kenneth Pool, and asked him to bring our readers up to speed with what was happening and the plans for a resolution of the problem.
As part of their routine maintenance of the Milntown site, the club officials organised bridge specialists Acrow UK to inspect the Bailey bridge across the Ewes Water which was originally installed in 1985 by a team from the Royal Engineers. The inspection was carried out in February and the devastating report was received in mid-March with the restrictions in use taking immediate effect. Over the years, the bridge had had inspections and repairs done to the metal work and the timber on the platform replaced, but the condition of the structure appears to have deteriorated since then.
