Warbla petition prompts invitation to Gougeon
Following an excellent response from local residents to a petition objecting to the Warb Law Hill (Warbla) Forestry Proposals, which gathered almost 600 signatures, it was recognised this alone would not be sufficient to sway government officials. It was decided that Langholm Community Forum, consisting of thirteen local organisations should make a direct approach to the Minister for Rural Affairs, Mairi Gougeon, with a request for a Cumulative Environmental Impact Assessment before any planting could take place.
The request was made in light of the number of farms in the local area (DG13/14) which had already been purchased by the major forestry company James Jones and Son and their partners Gresham House Investments.
The Warb Law proposals being the latest in a chain of, as yet, unchecked rapid land-use changes proposed for the area, the likely adverse impacts of which, it was felt, were not being properly assessed.
