…US President in Langholm
After the news of the death of the Ex-President Jimmy Carter, the E&L took a nostalgic look back to remember the day he said hello to Langholm.
In August 1995 Jimmy Carter, who was the American President from 1976 to 1980, paid a surprise visit to Langholm. Former E&L editor Joy Chatters said it was the most embarrassing moment in her years as an editor. When an old friend, who was known for his jokes, rushed into the office to tell her that the former President was in the Corner Cafe her response had been along the lines of “pull the other one”. Ten minutes later someone else called in with the same message so she grabbed the camera but it was too late. Instead of talking to him she was left talking to everyone who had met him! She said all were impressed by this unassuming guy.
Langholm will be talking about it for years …. the day that ex-President Jimmy Carter dropped in. For those who were lucky enough to see him there followed the difficult job of convincing the rest of the town of the VIP visit. The former American President had been on a private trip to Scotland staying on Monday evening at a hotel just outside Edinburgh.
On Tuesday morning he was enroute for Wales when he surprised the Muckle Toon by stopping off for refreshments.
Three cars pulled up outside Langholm Town Hall and while Mr Carter and his wife Rosalyn with his grandchildren James and Sarah, called in for tea and biscuits at Langholm Guest House, his bodyguards went off to the Corner Café for bacon rolls and coffee,
