Concerned parents have produced a detailed report on the alarming lack of measures in place
Gillian and Kevin McCartney are parents of children attending Langholm Primary school and they contacted the E&L to bring attention to their campaign to improve road safety outside Langholm’s Primary school.
As parents of two children who attend Langholm Primary School we are concerned about the dangers faced by both our children and others on a daily basis when they cross the road to and from school.
We have witnessed one near miss event with a timber lorry and know there have been other cases of near misses.
When approached, the school acknowledged near misses but due to data protection could not disclose any details. We were assured near misses on the road outside the school had been reported to Dumfries & Galloway Council.
We asked Dumfries & Galloway Council through the Freedom of Information Act to disclose how many near misses had been reported on the roads around Primary/Senior Schools in the Annandale and Eskdale district within the last 24 months – they told us there were none on file (FoI D&G Council case reference: 5411445).
We fully understand that a parent has a legal obligation to see their child safely to school, but we have firsthand experience of crossing to the school and know that this is not always possible due to the road layout and lack of safety features
outside Langholm Primary School.
