Cello maestro Will, 15, puts Langholm on the map
Will Archibald was just seven years old when he first picked up a cello.
Barely eight years later, the Langholm Academy pupil has come within a whisker of being judged Scotland’s Young Solo Musician of the Year.
Will, 15, finished runner-up in this year’s prestigious national competition – only the second time it has been held.
Staged at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, last Sunday’s event in Glasgow was the culmination of a contest open to all young musicians who go to school in Scotland, whatever age or standard.
Will was representing Dumfries & Galloway in a 30-strong field, and wowed the judges with his performance of Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály’s notoriously complex solo cello sonata.
