As angle of fence increases, council budgets for repairs to start – maybe!
By Alan Weatherstone
There is a road warning sign in use nationally that warns drivers of an “Adverse Camber” this is explained as a road surface that slopes away making it more
challenging for vehicles to maintain traction and stability. This normally refers to curves on roads but is equally applicable to one Langholm street.
If you drive east on the lower part of Caroline Street, towards the Suspension Bridge, you will notice that parts of the original fence are leaning towards the
Wauchope at an increasingly alarming angle and keeping to the right to avoid the parked cars, you are also driving at a similar angle due to the ‘adverse camber’.
The E&L covered this story in December 2023 when concern was high about the street collapsing into the Wauchope. A subsequent site meeting with council roads
engineers and residents resulted in the promise of the introduction of a 7.5 ton weight restriction, and further examination of the state of the road itself by digging trenches to look at the foundations.
