Town gets tested

THE coronavirus mobile testing unit will return to Langholm on Friday, May 22.

Mobile testing for COVID-19 is now available for key workers other than health, social care and council staff who are being tested by the NHS.

The full list of who is eligible is at www.gov.scot/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-getting-tested/pages/who-can-be-tested/

The testing in Langholm will be in the Market Place. The unit will also be at the Harthill depot on the B7068 in Lockerbie next Tuesday.

Anyone on the list, who wants a test, must book an appointment https://self-referral.test-for-coronavirus.service.gov.uk/Last Friday the 12-strong unit, runby 2 Scots, Second Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, tested people at the Kilngreen

There are four teams in their battalion and they are being supported by 6 Scots, a reserve infantry battalion.

Captain Ed Shepherd, the unit commander, said they had been testing in various places around the region for a week.
He added: “It has been steady here today. Our objective is to get to those key workers who are symptomatic and will benefit from the test.

“You only need to take a test if you have symptoms. “It’s great for the guys to be ableto do something. The reason we’re here is to take pressure off the NHS so people with symptoms do not go into the hospitals. We can take that pressure.

“Some of the guys have wives working in the NHS so we want to do everything we can to play our part.”Last Friday was the VE Day 75th anniversary and Captain Shepherd said they were quiet enough at 11am to observe a two-minute silence.

They are currently in training before leaving for a tour in Kabul in Afghanistan.
