Controversial plans for a long-range rifle range at Clerkhill are back on the table.
The objections are well documented–but the man behind the scheme says he’s just misunderstood

According to the sat-nav, it’s a little over 13 miles to Clerkhill Farm–but on the twisty, potholed road out of Langholm it seems much further. The entrance is a sharp right, a few hundred yards from the centre of Eskdalemuir, but even then you have to continue for another mile along a dirt road, then up an impossibly steep gravel track to the top of the hill. Here, clinging to a small man-made plateau, with a panoramic view of the desolate moorland, is a rickety wooden shed that from the back looks like something from the set of a Hollywood western.
