50 years ago tomorrow the First Man on the Moon came to Eskdale to honour his ancestral connections and become Langholm’s First and only Freeman.
When Neil Alden Armstrong took that first step on the lunar landscape in 1969 watched by six million people worldwide, local folks decided they would claim him as their own.
Famously, an invitation was extended, and to the town’s great surprise and excitement, the Moon man agreed and arrived with his first wife Janet on a bright, cold March morning in 1972.
