Remote communities like Newcastleton could be left in a highly vulnerable position when the analogue telephone system is completely switched off in 2025. Landline operators are currently in the process of switching every home phone in the UK to an internet-based connection instead of traditional, copper-wire landlines. However according to industry watchdog Ofcom, around six percent of households in the UK – that’s roughly 1.5million homes – do not have access to the Internet.
