A mural paints 1,000 words

THE launch of Mural Stories, a project to decorate walls in Langholm with murals, is being held this weekend.
The event and the project are organised by OutPost Arts in its High Street hub, The Look Out.
Residents may have seen The Little White Rose on the side of the E&L office and the mural depicting history and culture, designed by school pupils, in The Look Out.
This Saturday Lucy MacLeod, OutPost Arts’ creative director, will start work on a mural on an outside wall of Welcome to Langholm as part of the launch event.
She said: “Through the launch we’re announcing Mural Stories formally to the community. People will have seen The Little White Rose metal mural so this will let them know it’s part of a bigger project.
“We’ll give them the background and what the process has been up to this point. The workshops were done in the school so the community may not be aware of it.
“We’ll show a film made by Sian Yeshe showing the progress of the project behind the scenes, interviews with the artists and the meaning of each mural.”
There will be a workshop on Sunday doing painting, drawing and lino-cuts and they’ll be hung on the walls as they are made.
The team also want people to contribute to a window mural. They can take along a photo of a family member or friend who has passed away, anyone they would like to be included.
The theme is the people who have built Langholm. The photos will be printed and traced onto the window. It is hoped that, by the end of the weekend, the window will be covered with faces from Langholm.
People can also pop in over the next few weeks and add to it.
OutPost Arts is now looking for more ideas for murals and sites to place them.
