Connection with Neil Armstrong’s hometown is widely seen as a great benefit to Langholm
A press release has recently be distributed from the team behind the organisation of Langholm’s Proclamation of Kinship with Wapakoneta, Ohio
After five years of discussions, the two towns, some 3,600 miles apart, have established this kinship to honour their mutual connection with Neil Armstrong,
the first man on the moon.
We summarise the main points of the document below:
Proclamation of Kinship: The proclamation was presented in both communities, marking a kinship connection through Armstrong’s accomplishments, dated 4th December 2023.
Community Engagement: Both communities intend to form Kinship Committees to promote cultural, educational, and economic exchanges.
Historical Connection: The kinship idea originated from Armstrong’s visit to Langholm in 1972, but it gained momentum after Greg Myers initiated discussions in 2018 and further progress was made following a visit by Armstrong’s sons in September 2022.
Cultural Exchanges: The agreement aims to foster international connections and friendships through cultural exchanges, as highlighted by Laura Jean Marquis, herself an Armstrong.
