James Ketchell gave an entertaining and highly engaging talk on his life as a world class professional adventurer over the last twenty plus years. Entirely self-taught, he is every bit (and more) a modern day Sir Ranulph Fiennes, but without the Special Forces level military training…
James a.k.a. ‘Captain Ketch’, says he started out as shy, spotty school-boy without skills, confidence or ambition. Nevertheless exposure to motor cycles as a teenager seemed to ignite a highly competitive spirit, if not ability, which led to a (perhaps inevitable) 120mph crash with multiple serious injuries, requiring months of hospital treatment. He was warned by his attendant medics that his injuries were ‘life changing’ – and they were, but not in any way they could possibly have envisaged. Far from daunting him, his two years of painful recovery, were to inspire James to take up rowing – and to row across the Atlantic – solo!
