Popular son of Copshaw’s wish was to increase awareness of the disease
Newcastleton lost one of its best loved sons last month with the death of Philip Hedley. His funeral on December 20 was held in the village square to accommodate family, friends and the many mourners who wanted to pay their last respects to a man who had become a friend to everyone he met and who was always ready to help anyone who needed it.
Philip played many roles in the village, including volunteer firefighter, builder, caterer, plumber and Undertaker. He was also a highly popular Tub and at his funeral members of the Common Riding committee saluted his passing with the traditional four hip-hip hoorays.
Philip died at the age of just 67 after a long battle with prostate cancer. By his own admission, he had ignored symptoms for too long and it was his last wish that as many men as possible be made aware of the need to have themselves checked for the condition.
