Following the news that Canonbie Post Office and shop were up for sale and the postmaster was planning to retire at the end of February, the Community Meeting which was being planned has been organised for 1st November and will take place in the Cross Keys Hotel at 7pm. It will be in the hotel because Canonbie Hall is in use.
At its last meeting, Canonbie Community Council was informed, by Councillor Denis Male, of Postmaster Andrew Scott’s intention to retire and put the Post Office and shop up for sale. He also intimated that he would be delighted if a Community Trust could be set up and the business become a Community Business. He would do all he could to work with the Community to achieve their ambitions.
After a full discussion by the Community Council it was decided that members of the Council should take the proposal for a local Trust to a full scale Community meeting.
Chair Carol Midwood called for a sub-committee to be formed, after reminding members, that the Community Council could not become a Trust and was not allowed to own a business.
