Gilly Fraser reports on rumours of an imminent cull of our popular Tarras neighbours
The company which now owns the former Blackburn and Hartsgarth farms on Langholm Moor has denied that it has any immediate plans to cut the numbers of wild goats on the land.
The rumour of a cull had alarmed both local residents and visitors who visit the area specially to see the iconic animals.
The Devon-based company Oxygen Conservation completed the purchase of nearly 11,500 acres of land which had previously been part of Buccleuch Estates in April 2023.
In a statement the company said they are currently in the process of creating planting plans and conservation objectives for Blackburn and Hartsgarth.
“A significant part of our efforts is aimed at balancing grazing pressures, which are crucial for the success of tree planting and allowing natural regeneration of native woodlands,” the statement continues.
