TWO young athletes from Langholm helped their team from Annan and District Athletics Club to win gold in a national competition in Glasgow last Saturday.
Matilda Brockley and Freya Blaikie joined Lyvie Bryson and Neve McGoldrick at the Scotstoun Stadium to compete in FPSG U12 Superteams (outdoor).
Each athlete must compete in turbo javelin, long jump, 75metres sprint and 4x100m sprint relay.
Points are awarded for each performance and added together to give a team score.
There were 108 teams on the day, 63 of which were girls’ teams.
Two other Langholm girls were on the Annan B team. Ava Bell and Antonia Brockley joined Phoebe Thorburn and Grace Thorburn.
Both teams competed well throughout the event, enjoying a very good competition, with very strong performances from Annan A team.
After two events, Annan A were in third position. Team North Ayrshire and Victoria Park Glasgow were first and second.
With the long jump and relay still to come, the girls continued competing well and all four were within the top 30 results.
Matilda recorded the longest jump in the girls’ competition and gained maximum points for the team.
The final event of the day was the relay, in which the girls ran brilliantly, winning their heat with a strong time.
Annan B team performed well in the competition and had an outstanding relay race. They won their heat and finished with the 24th fastest time in the girls’ competition.
The A team won with 936 points and the B team in 26th place with 283.5 points.
An ADAC spokesperson said: “This was an outstanding achievement for both teams and showed that a small club can win a Scottish championship event against big Central Belt clubs.
“Even better, this makes Annan and District A team double champions because they won the
Superteams’ indoor event at
Emirates Stadium in February.
“Well done to all the girls. You are a credit to your families and to the club.
“A big thank you to all the parents for your continued support and to Jim Sloan for coaching the girls to success.”
The next date is the Cumbria League Match 3 in Barrow this Saturday and YDL match 3 this Sunday.
