After 20 years, planning permission is sought for removal of Erskine Church spire
Could Langholm’s biggest eyesore soon become a thing of the past?
That’s the fervent hope of one campaigner who says a planning application to remove the spire from the town’s Erskine Church is the furthest progress to be made in the last 20 years.
The spire has been a blight on the skyline for many years but local people say concerns that the building is becoming extremely dangerous are even more important than its physical appearance.
Earlier this year, repair and maintenance was carried out on the 20-year-old scaffolding surrounding the spire. However, that only amounts to a temporary fix.
Now Dumfries & Galloway Planning Department has received an application from a Yorkshire-based firm of architects to remove the spire altogether.
That news has provided a glimmer of hope to those who have been calling for a solution to the problem for years.
