Langholm Rotarians are offering free assessments to anyone
Driving is a major and often essential part of modern life, especially for those of us living in rural areas.
Having passed the UK driving test there is no requirement to resit unless your licence has been taken away for legal rea- sons, or because there is concern over the driving competence of an elderly driver. Conse- quently, the majority of us only sit one driving test in our life- time. However, as time passes skill fade is not unusual and can offset any gain in competence achieved through on-road experience. From time to time there are changes in the High- way Code, the most recent being the introduction of the Hierarchy of Road Users introduced in 2023, and as we age our senses and flexibility can sadly diminish making it more difficult to judge suitable gaps in traffic, to drive at ambient traffic speed, and to drive
competently at night.
The Rotary Club of Langholm has two highly qualified Driving Trainers and Examiners: Peter Forsyth, who is a Police Advanced Driving and Motor- cycling Instructor and George Cairns, who is a Driving and Motorcycling Examiner with IAM RoadSmart (formerly
known as the Institute of Advanced Motorists). Peter and George are offering residents of the Town an opportunity to take a ‘Discovery Drive’, with the aim of assessing current driving competence. This involves you driving your own car for about 45 minutes with one of us observing how you deal with the day to day driving challenges that appear.
