Sediment build-up poses no flooding risk, say
Campaigners and officials remain at loggerheads after another meeting to resolve the issue of gravel build-up in the Esk at Langholm.
This week a group including local councillors, Buccleuch Estates, the Scottish Environment Agency (SEPA), the Scottish Flood Forum and the Ditch the Drain group gathered to examine close-up the sediment which has formed on the George Street and Elizabeth side of the river.
Afterwards, Wendy Hotson of Ditch the Drain expressed the group’s long-held concern that the build-up is damaging the bank, which could result in the undermining the wall and the road beyond.
However, James McLeod, infrastructure manager at D&G Council said that after checking George Street they had no worries about the wall as it was firmly located on bedrock.
A lengthy discussion about gravel removal followed, after which both Mr McLeod and Anna Griffin of SEPA said that the gravel did not pose a flooding risk.
