Top great sporting year with an award

NOMINATIONS are now open for the Annandale and Eskdale sports awards organised by Dumfries and Galloway council.

With the inspiring events of the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games and Glasgow 2014 fast approaching, sport has been in the spotlight.

There have been some notable local sporting achievements by individuals, teams and schools in Annandale and Eskdale.

If you think any of these individuals, teams or schools deserve recognition for their dedication and commitment to sport or outstanding success in their chosen sport during 2012, leisure and sport would like to hear from you.

This is an ideal opportunity to endorse your school’s sporting achievements, no matter how major or minor, big or small.

The council recognises the importance of everyone who participates in sport, whether as a competitor, coach, official or the volunteers behind the scenes who do all the work necessary to keep clubs functioning.

There are several categories: sports personality of the year sponsored by Anderson Joinery; young sports personality of the year sponsored by Grange Quarry Ltd; sports team of the year sponsored by Kian’s of Annan; service to local sport award sponsored by the Cumberland Building Society; volunteer of the year sponsored by The Star Hotel, Moffat; school sport initiative/team performance of the year award – large schools sponsored by The Dumfries & Galloway Standard; school sport initiative/team performance of the year award – small schools sponsored by the Corner House Hotel, Annan; and coach of the year award sponsored by Magnox Limited.

Annandale East and Eskdale councillor Denis Male said: “The level of participation and achievements in sport continues to rise in Annandale and Eskdale and I would like to see people nominate those who are worthy of an award.”

Calum Graham, sports development officer, added: “This is a chance to recognise the valuable work and efforts of people in Annandale and Eskdale in the field of sport whether as a participant, coach or volunteer and I would urge everyone to put forward these champions from their communities.”

Contact Calum on 01461 207046 or email calum.graham@dumgal.gov.uk for nomination forms or pick one up in the Eskdale Sports Centre in Langholm or any local government office.
