Legion just fall short

LEGION looked as though they really wanted to win with a promising display of controlled aggression and skill.
Langholm Legion 3 Hawick Waverley 3
This league game was on the Castleholm and, as expected, the pitch was heavy but Langholm now have no option but to play their remaining seven league games on it.
Langholm started brightly, passing the ball well on the big pitch. Waverley looked dangerous on the break and scored with their first shot on goal when Mccolm, their best player, hit a rasping shot past Johnson.
Langholm passed the ball quite well and skipper Lee Irving dominated the midfield.
Davidson and Mattinson went close before a cross from Little came in from the right and Davidson controlled it nicely before swivelling and hitting a crisp left-footed shot into the bottom corner of the net.
This gave the whole team a lift. Haldane, Little and Borthwick made forward runs supporting the two strikers and, with Irving tackling everything that moved, it was only a matter of time before another goal came along.
Unfortunately for the home team, it came for Hawick after a shot hit Cuthbert on the his ribs and the ref awarded a penalty. McColm scored again.
The second half started well for Langholm. Mattinson caused the defence all kinds of problems with his pace. The home side forced a few corners and from one of these Thomlinson scored an equaliser with a back-post header.
Veteran midfielder Dave Borthwick had a great chance when he was sent clear but his shot hit the side netting.
It was his last action of the match as his old legs were reacting to the energy-sapping surface. He was replaced on the hour mark by Davie Glendinning.
Langholm looked as if they could sneak a win but a snap shot from 20 yards eluded their defence and Hawick regained the lead.
A lovely pass from Glendinning sent Ali Little clear and as he was going past the keeper, he was sent sprawling just outside the box. The keeper was sent off and Mattinson was off target with the free kick.
Davidson was replaced by Steve Lamb, making his first appearance this season, and his through balls continued to make chances.
Barry Henderson, feeling the effects of the pitch, was replaced by Daniel Johnstone.
Langholm really pushed for the equaliser and it came when Lamb took the ball into the box, beat a man and squared it to Cuthbert who gleefully sidefooted it past the hapless keeper.
Langholm pushed for the winner and almost got it when a Glendinning free kick scraped the post with the keeper well beaten. Hawick held out for a draw.
Team: D Johnson, C Cuthbert, B Henderson, M Thomlinson, C Ireland, A Little, D Borthwick, L Irving, J Haldane, R Davidson, B Mattinson. Subs: D Glendinning, S Lamb, D Johnstone, G Irving.
After a league executive committee meeting last week, Legion have been docked three points and fined £50 for their inability to field a team against Gala Rovers on January 5.
With many of the players suffering flu, it had been impossible to gather enough players.
