BOWHOLM edged out Biggar in the second round of the Waddell Cup, although it was a very tight game which could have gone either way.
CFC Bowholm 1 Biggar 0
The game started with Biggar well on top. They were playing some superb football to which Bowholm had no answer. Goalkeeper Lee Field kept Bowholm in the game with a string of fine saves.
With 20 minutes gone, Bowholm had weathered the storm and their midfield started to get a hold of the ball. This enabled striker Jordan Mcleary to come into the game and his pace began to cause the defence problems.
Bowholm went close when a fine run and shot from Euan Stainthorp was cleared off the line by a defender and a Lewis Hawes shot produced a good save from the keeper.
Bowholm made the breakthrough on 38 minutes. A Stix Muir pass sent Mcleary down the left wing and he raced by his marker to deliver a great cross to the front post and Andrew Paisley.
Just before Paisley connected with the ball the Biggar centre half made a desperate lunge to clear but succeeded only in putting the ball into his own net and giving Bowholm a 1-0 lead which they held until half time.
In the second half Biggar did most of the attacking as they tried to get back into the game but Bowholm’s central defenders Scott Weir and Chris Thorp were immense and kept them at bay.
Bowholm were always dangerous on the counter-attack and should have gone 2-0 up.
Mcleary went through on goal but saw the keeper save his shot and, although the rebound fell kindly for Paisley, he put the ball wide.
The final 10 minutes were very nervy for the Bowholm fans and management as Biggar laid siege to the goal but the whole team dug deep and thwarted Biggar at every turn and ensured Bowholm progressed to the next round.
This was a fantastic performance from Bowholm which augurs well for the rest of the season.
