Ross High 24 Langholm 21

LANGHOLM faced a tricky encounter against Ross High at Tranent last Saturday.

The team took to the road knowing that Ross High, like Langholm, were so far undefeated this season and were just behind Langholm in the league table.

The match started with pressure from the home side which the visitors defended well.

A penalty for Ross High after five minutes fell just short of the posts. Langholm pressed the home team's line and won a penalty which was kicked to the corner.

With 11 minutes on the clock, the resultant move sent Jonathan Wilkes scampering in for a try which Nathan Smith converted to make the score 0-7.

Ross High now turned up the heat, kicking down the field and making the visitors run back into their own half.

With just over quarter of an hour played they scored a try in the corner but the difficult conversion was missed.

Ross High were fielding three ex-Boroughmuir players and this began to tell as the first half progressed.

A couple of Ross High penalties failed to hit the mark but just on the half hour they scored another try to take the score to 10-7.

Langholm fought back and it was their turn to miss a couple of difficult penalties. They continued to pressurise the home line and, with half time looming, Jason Ratcliffe forced himself over the line for a good try which Smith converted.

Half time Ross High 10 Langholm 14.

Langholm started the second half brightly and played some good rugby, competing well at the breakdown. A long-range penalty by Smith fell just short of the posts and Langholm kicked to the corners to keep the home team in their own half.

A yellow card was given to the Ross High flanker but it was another seven minutes before Langholm capitalised.

Cubbon took the ball and ran past the Ross high prop to score a good try which Smith converted to taker the score to 10-21 with just under 20 minutes to play.

Ross High threw everything into attack and Langholm were under real pressure. They tried to play too much rugby in their own half and this led to a few mistakes which Ross High capitalised on. They scored a converted try after 25 minutes of the second half.

With 15 minutes left, Langholm came under intense pressure. Ross High missed another penalty but kept up the pressure.

Nicky Laidlaw won a penalty with eight minutes to go but the difficult kick was missed. With only three minutes left, Langholm failed to clear the ball and Ross High scored their fourth and final try to take the lead.

The kick was converted and Ross High won by 24-21 and left Langholm to ponder on what could have been. A losing bonus point was achieved.

This was a closely-contested game of rugby by two well-matched teams. Langholm tasted defeat for the first time this season but remain second in East League 2 on 24 points, one point ahead of Ross High.

Langholm entertain Gala YM at Mintown at 3pm this Saturday. Gala YM are currently fifth in the league on 20 points so it should be an interesting encounter.
