Martin Thomlinson, who has played for Legion for 20 years and been captain for many, has bowed out but not ruled out playing the odd game.

Manager Barry Henderson, speaking at their annual meal in the Douglas Hotel, one of the club's main supporters, said the players had made the "right choice".

Other awards were player of the year to Lee Irving, top goal scorer to Barry Mattinson, who scored 18 goals in 15 games, and E&L player of the year to Callum Ireland.

Barry said: "Martin has done an unbelievably sterling job. People won't realise how much he does until he steps down, including organising buses, strips and sponsors.

"He takes young players under his wing, something other players wouldn't bother to do, but Martin does bother. The door is always open to him but after 20 years, he deserves to do something else."

Barry said it had been a season of highs and lows. They had lost their first five games but they hit back and had a really good mid-season but after Christmas, they fell away again. They had finished ninth in Division A through goal difference.

He said: "The commitment on the pitch has been really good. During the games people came and said to me what a good team you are.

"Whatever league we finish in, (A or B), we'll have a hard battle so we need to train and get fitter."
