Lowest ebb: Legion in bid to save club from folding

LANGHOLM Legion football club is holding an EGM in the Douglas Hotel on Sunday, September 7 to try to stop the club from folding.

The club, which plays in the A division of the Border Embroideries amateur league, completed its pre-season with a welcome 3-2 win over Hawick Utd, having suffered heavy defeats to Penrith Rangers (0-6) and Hearts of Liddesdale (0-3) in previous matches.

Manager Dave Simmons said: “It is fair to say the club is at its lowest ebb, with only a small squad available and no committee to speak of. Training numbers hardly reach above eight people. The club took a gamble to embrace two teams last year but this has backfired, resulting in a breakaway club now formed at Canonbie.

“Key players over the last 10 years have decided to hang up their boots, while at the other end of the scale some of the good young talent are now away to university.

“A squad of only 14 players is far too thin for the rigours of Border A league. A committee of one man is also ridiculous. It is time for the town of Langholm to either come forward and actively support its football team or simply let it die.

“The club has been in existence since 1994 and during that time I would have thought at least 200 people would have taken pride in pulling on the Legion jersey.

“It’s time to put something back in or else the dream of a community-based football club using the excellent facilities here will be finished. Wake up all football lovers in Langholm”

The meeting is at 7pm.
