POMPEII is certainly no comedy show – as Jessie and Larry Martin found out on a recent visit to the ruined city.
It lay buried for 1,700 years after the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
To see the preserved frescos, the Roman baths and the “cats eyes”, which the inhabitants set in the pavements to find their way home – many centuries before we invented them – was an unbelievable experience for Jessie, who is pictured with that well-travelled newspaper, the E&L Advertiser. Jessie says if you have never been to the Pompeii ruins, put it on your list of must-see locations.
Meanwhile, on his first trip abroad Stuart Tedham of Langholm took a copy of the Eskdale & Liddesdale Advertiser during his visit to the Rock of Gibraltar.
Stuart and his family were on holiday in Fuengirola, Spain, and decided to visit the English territory on a day visit. Gibraltar has been an English territory since 1704 and was ceded forever to Britain by Spain in the treaty of Utrecht in 1713.
