Racing their way to second and third places are Robert McLean and Elliot Little of Langholm, while the winner was Lewis Carruthers of Eaglesfield

The kids, aged eight to 14, went on the trip with the Annandale & Eskdale sports and leisure trust’s summer sports academy.

At Scotland’s premier car racing circuit they got the chance to follow in the wheels of Lewis Hamilton and other racing heroes.

The youngsters had the opportunity to drive Honda GX160cc cadet karts and 270cc Pro Karts at speeds of up to 50mph.

The day’s session included a full safety briefing and driving tuition, safety equipment with pro racing suits and two sessions over 35 laps of the 500m circuit.

Sports development officer Calum Graham, who accompanied them on the trip, said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for any Formula 1 or car racing fanatic.

“And it gave an insight into how to begin and what is required to become a racing driver.

“These cars were certainly not your everyday go-karts with the children racing against each other in a controlled and safe environment.”
