Soldiers relax between Workington bridge building shifts with TVs from stores

The officer in charge of soldiers building a footbridge over the River Derwent has brought some home comfort to his army colleagues – thanks to his mum.
Lieutenant Colonel Rob Blackstock’s mother Jackie is security manager at Tesco’s store in Gloucester, which has donated a television for troops to watch while they rest in their riverside shelter between the current round-the-clock shifts.
Tesco’s local Workington store, which is just a short distance from the footbridge, had already donated a telly for the on-site use of the soldiers, who include local TA volunteers as well as the Royal Engineers.
Lt Col Blackstock said: “We’d have welfare packs when we are in Afghanistan or Iraq but we don’t carry items like televisions. So it is brilliant to get not one but two from Tesco. We have got them on-site now in the troop shelter and they are absolutely superb.
“One is from the Workington store and the other is from the Gloucester store, where my mother works. She was glad to be able to help even though she’s a long way away from West Cumbria.
"The televisions allow the soldiers to catch up on what is going on outside the ‘bubble’ they are working in.”
