Plenty of choice in Cumbria's villages

Timeline continues the trip down Memory Lane, recalling popular country venues in Cumbria where people used to hear their favourite music.

The Golden Fleece at Ruleholme, where I remember they did a tasty chicken-in-a-basket, hosted the Maurice Petry Trio while the Royal Oak at Sebergham saw entertainment from Geoff Dickens, with Tommy Baxter on the organ and Gordon Atkinson as compère.

Other popular pubs were the String of Horses, Faugh; Haywain, Little Corby; Hare and Hounds, Wigton; Royal Oak, Sour Nook and many more.

Even village halls held dances. At Dalston you could be entertained by Tommy Giacopazzi and at the Helk Moon at Scaleby, there was David Clapperton.

During the 1960s Country Music was becoming increasingly popular and so more venues began offering this music.

The Lofthouse Motel at Bothel was one popular venue. Also Langley Hall at Corby Hill and The Astra Club in Low Hesket which had music on every night except a Monday.

Local country bands also emerged. There was The Runaways, The Lofthouse Cowboys and The Drifting Cowboys to name but a few.

Jazz still remained as popular as it was during the 1950s and the Garnett Club was where you would find Mick Potts and The Gateway Jazz Band.

In 1963 a new jazz club opened in Carlisle on a Sunday night at the King’s Head pub. Music was by either the Arthur Curwen Trio, The Black Tulip Orchestra, Trombones Incorporated or the Downbeat 4.

Within a few weeks it became so popular that new premises had to be found. The Carlisle and District State Management offered organisers The Pheasant Inn, which they completely modernised and in December 1963 the Carlisle New Jazz Club opened.

Timeline would love to hear from readers who can remember any other venues and also any entertainers who used to play at them so we can include them on our page.

Can you remember the venues you used to go to during the 1970s as well, so we can include them when we do the feature? Let us know.
