Wanderer
The day the moon fell in
IT DOES not feel like 30 years since I first had the temerity to inflict my blethers upon Eskdale and Liddesdale but it must be a fact.

Being an octogenarian has its advantages
IT WAS too far to walk to London and to buy a train ticket I had to resort to a bus journey to the railway station because the car has decided that after driving for more than 60 years and taking a tumble in the hills, I am no longer bright enough.

Remains of mine works hidden in the hills
SINCE my car has disposed of my services, I have found other means of arriving at the Wanderer’s wandering areas.

How a stranger wandered into town in 1956
WE CAME to Langholm on February 14, 1956. At least, Wanderer showed face that day, while Mary arrived in August and two wee lassies came along a few months later.

You’ll be OK in the wind – if you’ve got a dog
BOTH my works and my walks are tending to be reduced in length and in activity. The problem is I tend not to realise the fact that capability moderates until it’s almost too late to rectify.

Sights and dales of the Benty

Days when shepherds smelled like sheep
JOCK’S Hope has been one of the least frequented available footways in our dales, despite the fact the entrance to this wee glen is less than a mile from the A7 near Ewes.

Some things are too good to be private
ONLY seven miles from the centre of Carlisle can be found the pretty rural countryside of the Gelt.

Spotting the magic colours of our seasons
AFTER such a devious summer and autumn, it hasn’t been such a transition into the darker nights of winter.

Lonely as a cloud to reach berry heaven
IT MUST be nearly 10 years since last I walked round Glenrief. Now, you ask me, where is Glenrief? Just hover a blink and it will all become clear, I hope.

Turbines tumbling through the mind
IN ESKDALE there is a group of four wind turbines above Carlesgill looking down upon us lesser mortals with another group at Callister Hall between there and Minsca Hill near Waterbeck. A third has been planned between Solway Bank and Callister.

360 degree panoply from Crumpton top
A lot of Langholm has changed in the last few years; a grand new road to the south, a new road onto Meikleholm Hill. The toon hall has had its faced lifted.

The Wanderer returns – in Bill’s BMW 4x4
HELLO again. It seems to be a long time since we last met but, in fact, only two and a half years have passed.

Taking the plunge and phoning 999 from a hill
IT WAS a lovely spring afternoon as I crossed the Potholm bridge and parked below the farm. The hill track took me upwards, past the cottage and followed the cleuch before turning left towards Sorbie Haas.

WINDY Edge lies between Langholm and Copshaw or between Tarras and Liddel if that suits better.

Lapwings, please come and visit us in plenty this summer
IN SOME years there might be an abundance of certain birds, while the very next year there might be a decided dearth of the same species.
