WHAT a disappointment to have reached Bessie Bell’s in the course of a walk and find you can’t cross the water and continue up onto the road leading to the Caulfield because the bridge over the Wauchope Water is no longer there.

It was always a favourite walk on a Tuesday afternoon or a Monday evening in the summer, starting at the Park Brig and on up to the Stubholm, through Gaskell’s and along the Lockerbie road to Bessie Bell’s.
