Bring fair back

ON MAY 14, 2011 I wrote to your paper in response to the 600 per cent increase imposed on the fairground attractions on the Kilngreen on election night.
A full year has passed and councillor Denis Male has done nothing in the way of bringing back the fair. In fact, he has brushed it under the carpet and forgotten about it.
Can I say to you again councillor Male how important I think the fair is on that night? It not only brings money and people into the town, it also gets people of all ages out of their houses and, in turn, would increase the vote for all the candidates who stood that night. After all, you wanted everyone in Langholm to go out and vote for yourself in the council election the previous week. So, why have you not bothered doing anything about it in the year that has passed? Did you think we would all forget? Well, I for one haven’t and won’t forget about it.
You have been re-elected, so stand up and do your job. Surely some income from the Kilngreen is better than nothing. I am sure if I had asked you about it a month ago you would have said it was top of your list just to get more votes.
There is very little for the kids to do in this town and taking away things like this just makes it worse. Will this eventually happen to the Common Riding? Just imagine that. I think if that happened, you would have a riot on your hands.
I don’t think it is too late to get Mr and Mrs Lawrence and all the other stallholders back. After all, it has become a tradition having the shows on the Kilngreen on that night. It is a tradition that you and Dumfries and Galloway council are slowly killing.
Remember, the Kilngreen is an ancient place “where clay is got and it belongs to us by rite and lot”. So now I will conclude and say na mair except bring back the fun fair.
